What age should children be introduced to theatre? If you ask us, the earlier the better, as long as the show is age appropriate and the theatre in question caters for little thespians. If you are unsure and think that the whole experience might be overwhelming (you don’t want it to backfire) then we know just the place!
Polka Theatre in Wimbledon not only delivers fantastic (and always age appropriate!) shows for children but it also creates a whole day experience where children come in to play, get crafty with Polka’s highly experienced (and very friendly) staff, see a show and make new friends.
The main hall is like a big playroom with rocking horses, books and toys everywhere. From storytelling in one corner, to dressing up and role playing in the other, Polka knows how to make a good first impression. The place is not massive but it’s well distributed with an outside play area, a small garden, a cute little café, it never feels cramped (unless minutes before the show) and you can easily spend a day there.
The theatre runs performances throughout the year for children as young as one all the way up to the teenage years. Some performances allow you to bring in babies (though we would only recommend these if you do have a baby in tow).
What we love about Polka is its fantastic choice of workshops and courses that let children get involved in the life of a theatre and get a sneak peek behind the scenes for each of the performances. It goes without saying that we’ll be keeping a close eye on all interesting things happening there and keeping you in the know.
