Now we love adult humour but we are also very partial to children’s humour too– call it the child within! So when we found out that the Unicorn were doing a family friendly version of Shakespeare’s comedy, The Winter’s Tale, we had to go see it.
The plot is more or less the same, only this interesting and utterly entertaining adaptation is a story within a story made up and acted out by grown-up actors playing children. Despite the obvious mature physical appearance, the four actors masterfully transform themselves into kids and immediately connect with the younger audience.
From the very first scene the show is bursting with hilarious and witty jokes that appeal to both children and adults. The comic timing of the actors is impeccable and had caused numerous laughs and giggles. The whole performance is very relaxed and you do feel as you were witnessing a playdate rather than a play.
What’s really fascinating is the dynamic between the characters and how in every situation with kids, playground politics apply. There’s always a ballsy, slightly irritating leader who is determined to get things his way. There’s a happy-go-lucky character ready to antagonise the leader only for the fun of it. The girl who unintentionally has the boys fighting for her attention. And of course there’s always a Baldrick! Someone who gets pushed around (usually a younger sibling).
Beautifully funny and wonderfully thought-out, A Winter’s Tale is the perfect theatre experience for the whole family.
