If there’s an award for a supporting act in children’s theatre, then Tigger Blaise has got our vote! Playing numerous short roles in The Snow Queen – including a pigeon, the sun, a flower and even a door –Tigger’s physicality, impeccable timing and comic genius made him the star of the show for us.

But let’s talk about the play itself. The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen is a well-known tale of friendship, courage and love. Roman Stefanski’s adaptation at Polka Theatre however takes an interesting approach in bringing the story to life. In a way, it’s a play within a play within a play, as we watch four children having fun in the attic. It’s through their games that we see the tale of Gerda, Kai and the icy Snow Queen unfold as they each tell their part of the tale.

Hard-core fans of Anderson’s fairytale might need to walk in with an open mind. There are no big battle scenes or deep exploration of each character’s journey, also the Snow Queen’s appearance is rather sparse. What is at the core of this story however are the four children and their relationship with each other as they delve from one play to another all along telling us the story of the Snow Queen. Their chemistry and play dynamic is amusing to watch, all four work hard at poking fun at each other and teasing one another, making the audience giggle all the way through the show.

The choice of costumes and set might seem surprising and amusing at times, but we are glad one accessory – the handmuff, has stood the test of time! However it definitely creates a sense of wonder, with a final scene adding that magic feeling that only Christmas productions have the power to do. All in all, The Snow Queen is a humorous and original take on Anderson’s fairytale, which faithfully carries the message that there’s nothing stronger than an open heart, or a true friendship for that matter!

The Snow Queen is showing at Polka Theatre on 17th Nov 2017 – 4th Feb 2018. For more information or to book tickets, please visit the website.
